Produced by the Radical Studio team in partnership with Ogilvy & Mather Chicago, The Blue Paradox is an immersive experience that seeks to move, engage, inspire action and spark conversation.

In addition to comping the layout and development concepting  for all of the rooms, I designed and conceptualized the Plastic Calculator UX/UI as well as it’s animation, the physical design for the new diorama wall,  the content and look of Room 4’s conveyors, and assisted with the overall Art Direction and exhibit design layout for this permanent installation at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Partners for this project:  SC Johnson, Ogilvy & Mather Chicago, & Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago.

ROOM 1: THE ROLE OF OUR OCEANS

The  immersive 360*  theater experience.

ROOM 2: THE DEPTH OF THE PROBLEM

Data visualization to show the rate at which plastic particles are entering the ocean, where the bulk of the plastic is coming from, and how it ultimately affects all aspects of marine and human life. Features a responsive particle system on the wall.

ROOM 3: THE PLASTIC PARADOX

A series of interactive plinths feature a set of question & answer animations, shedding light on the intricacies and complexities we face in dealing with the ocean-plastic problem.

ROOM 4: THE TIPPING POINT

Revolving conveyors of common products illustrate the overwhelming volume of plastic juxtaposed with realistic statistics about recycling practices – showing the relationship between consumption and disposal.

ROOM 5: SOLUTIONS AND ACTION

The final chapter of The Blue Paradox focuses on the power of individual and collective action. This Room features several interactive elements that range from education on each guests own plastic waste, and  invites guests to learn how industry and organizations are innovating to implement real change to help save the ocean and the planet.

ROOM 5 PART 1: PLASTIC CALCULATOR

MOTION EXAMPLES OF PARTICLE SYSTEM ANIMATIONS

For every guests answer, we converted their plastic waste into empty water bottles to give them a better understanding of the scale of their waste. We then measured how tall this unit of water bottles would be stacked on top of each other, and compared it to a randomized well known monument to help with visualization. I concepted, researched,  and designed the look of the results page from start to finish.

ROOM 5 PART 2: THE POWER OF INNOVATION

Solution/ Product wall with interactive Touch Screens, Flip Boxes, and Physical Diaromas that demonstrate  current solutions on an individual scale. Physical Diaroma backgrounds were designed in Blender and materialized by the Technical Production Team at Radical.
